Weekend in Tulum

Hi guys! Today I am sharing a few of our pictures from Tulum. We went there for a few days because I was shooting with Hollister! We booked 2 extra days to shoot some Luca + Grae pieces but we ended up coming home a day early because there was nooooo service and we were so behind on work! I was a little bit disappointed in my Tulum experience but I really think I was just not in the right mindset to be there. I was in work mode and not able to relax at all!! We booked 2 nights at the Azulik hotel. I had seen so many pictures on Instagram and thought it looked beautiful! I normally prepare for a trip by researching the area we are going to, looking at a lot of hotels, things to do, etc. I am a planner and I need to take time to organize everything! I didn’t have time to do that with this trip because I was already traveling so much during this month so I just booked the hotel and didn’t research a single thing. So we didn’t know that the hotel is an eco hotel which means no showers or electricity. The concept is really cool but the hotel was really expensive and I was just not prepared to pay that much and not be able to shower! There was no wifi in the rooms and they also had a “no photo” policy that I also wasn’t aware of. I had seen so many pictures on IG, I never would have even thought that a “no photo” policy could be a thing there! They also had a natural filtration system or something so basically… all the waste (aka people’s bathroom droppings) was out in the open to fertilize the trees or something so there was a very very veryyyyy unpleasant smell. If you are wanting to really disconnect and have the money to spend, the Azulik might be the hotel for you but for me, I preferred our room at the Coco Limited! We stayed there for the first half of our trip. Mexico is so close to us that I knew it would be easy to go back one day in the future so I will hopefully have a better experience next time! I think it would be fun to fly into Cancun, rent a car and road trip down that part of Mexico! If you have been to Tulum, let me know what your experience was in the comments below!

I’ve never been to Tulum before but your images look stunning! I’m totally with you though, I couldn’t pay so much and not be able to shower! Also, how do you edit your images? They have such a pretty aesthetic.

Aspyn i’m from Cancún, i live here and i watch your vlogs, it’s very common to find that type of eco hotels un Tulum, specifically because most of them try to keep that ‘natutal’ concept which makes it different, however i think you just didn’t booked the right one for you, because there’s this contrast where you can find some hotels like the one you stayed at, without electricity and some more ‘raw’ conditions, or the ones that have all the natura/minimalistic part but still keeping it modern with a shower and wife and that kind of things. No matter what i do highly recommend you to come back and stay un Cancún or the Riviera Maya, and you can’t miss ‘Xcaret’, ‘Chichen Itza’, ‘Xel-ha’ (Parker would love this one, a lot of snorkeling and swimming related stuff), and “Xoximilco” if you wanna go for a more mexican tradition activity, those are a MUST and easy to go if you plan the roadtrip, average distances are about 45 min away from Cancún.

My husband and I honeymooned in Tulum for ten days and it was the literal best ten days of our lives hahah. You definitely HAVE to go back. We stayed at Sanara and it was h e a v e n. They also have a restaurant onsite called The Real Coconut which was incredible. It is dairy, gluten and refined sugar free. I have a dairy allergy so this was again, heaven. Highly recommend!! I have a few posts on my blog with photos of our trip! Xoxo

I went to Tulum when I was in 6th grade and it was soooo beautiful!!! We took the resorts transportation to a local rental car place because it was cheaper to rent there. It was so nice to be able to go to the places we wanted to go to. The next time we went to mexico we rented another car and went to Coba and turtle bay which were both really cool bc they aren’t like guided or anything so you can kinda just do your own thing, which my family really enjoyed! Anyway I hope your next trip is amazing!!

Hey Aspyn! I just went to Tulum in December and thought it was amazing! I was wondering why you hadn’t post as many pictures from there, I hope you do go again and really experience all that Tulum and its surroundings have to offer. I think flying to Cancun and renting a car is a great idea, that’s what my husband and I did. I would recommend you to go to Xcaret part, Tulum Ruins, Cobá ruins, Chichenitza, and Cenote Ilkil (there are more cenotes but that one is beautiful and is close to Chichenitza) I think you would have a much better time if you get to go again in a relaxing mode and if you get to go to the places I mentioned. Hope my tips help! xo

Found Tulum in the 80,s due to an article in Outside magazine by an excellent writer…Randy Wayne White. Stayed at Cabanas Tulum again in 1984 or 1985 when I was heartsick over love. My story had a good ending, however, when in 1986 I spent part of my honeymoon at Cabanas Tulum. Nine dollars a night, USD. It was about tbe only place on the entire beach then. According to Google, Tulum had had 524 residents then. Frankly, I don’t even remember their being a town. That being said…..Tulum has lost her rustic…..rudimentary……lost in time soul that made it a magical place once upon a time. Help recapture the quintessential spirit of Tulum. Check out the movie in the making….The Dark Side of Tulum. HELP save Tulum. Super pic’s……Ms. Ovard. Looks like Papaya Playa

OMG! They didn’t have a shower I can’t believe you had so much resolve. I would have freaked.

P.S. I would love to have the chance to visit Mexico, all of my friends have gone.

I have been there. Tulum and all the Rivera Maya is beautiful! I actually live in Mexico as a proud Mexican. I’m sorry to hear you had an unpleasant stay but now, more hotels are being environmental friendly! Specially this area! Hope you chose to vist us again.

Love love love your outfits!! Especially the tie front top with shorts. I seriously can’t wait for when it’s warm enough here in Pittsburgh to wear less layers!

Damn… not being able to shower?? Wow I bet that must have grossed you out. I won’t spend that much either if I don’t get any great benefits at all.
I suggest Cancun too next time. It’s amazing, especially if you go with a couple of friends just to have fun. I would recommend.
I’m so sorry about your experience. I bet you must have been frustrated and just waiting to come home.

Your pictures look amazing! That’s such a bummer that you didn’t have a good time in that second hotel. The concept to me sounds a little silly. Why would you pay that much money to not have electricity, wifi,, or even showers?! I’m all for disconnecting and being in nature, but if I were in the mood to do that I’d just go camping haha. Much less expensive too.

    Thanks.

It’s really cool to see such eco-friendly hotels you have to admit that! Not so nice that it was unexpected though.

I love Mexico and Tulum is one of the most beautiful beaches in my experience. The people and the food are great also. It really is a shame that you guys didn’t enjoy it, you should go back some time.
